O, the ecstacy of production. I mentioned awhile ago a photo CMS that I was working on, one based on the photo display pages on this site.
After several false starts and meanderings, Photos is now just about ready for testing. It’s a web-based image management system. With it, one can
- Create photo sets for a site
- Upload sets in one go, via browser
- Change individual photos & thumbnails within a set on the fly
- Add or subtract photos from a set
- Create and edit captions
- Change the order in which photos are displayed
- Delete and rename photo sets
- Easily design pages to display photos, or use templates provided
What it does not do
- Take the photos for you
- Insert subliminal ghosted images of my dog
- Scale, optimize, produce thumbnails or manipulate images in any way. The burden is on the site owner to scale/crop images to a reasonable size and compression, and to produce their own thumbnails, and for this there is a reason. While it is possible, using programs such as Imagemagick and PHP, to automate these steps at the server level, the result is frequently terrible; certainly it never comes close to the quality/compression ratios available from Photoshop, Imageready, Fireworks, and other more affordable image editing software such as GraphicConverter for the Mac and [I have no idea] for the PC
I need some people (preferably those who know their way around PHP) to grind its gears and kick the tires before Photos will be released. Please let me know if you’re interested.
