In the time it takes to tear open the foil sachet (24 for €1.65), extract and unfold the lens cleaner, all the alcohol will have evaporated, leaving you with a dry, used serviette with which to clean your glasses. A glass of iced coffee (€3.85 for 250 grams) will sweat down its sides only as long as the ice cubes remain, which isn’t long. A fan (€16) on setting 3 (setting 2 is medium, setting 1 is low) doesn’t really affect the temperature, but will rustle the papers on the desk. There is no air conditioning in the loaner from the garage (free plus gas). It’s a Citröen: a lemon. Don’t leave chicken (€7) on the counter for more than an hour or it will go. Butter (€1.32) pools and shines in its dish.

The dogs lie on the tile floor, staring. The Macintosh fires up a cooling fan you didn’t know existed.

Not even summer yet.

UPDATE Half the license plates are Dutch.

UPDATE 2 Clouds don’t help, they only ladle a little water on the coals.
