First, the dog is taught to retrieve a rubber ball. Next, a small bit of smelly Gorgonzola is substituted for the rubber ball. After the dog learns to retrieve the cheese, the cheese is hidden. This forces the dog to sniff it out for a reward. Finally, a small truffle is substituted for the cheese. The dog is trained to find, then dig up the truffle.
Dogs are preferred to pigs as pigs are more likely to eat the truffle. Dogs would rather eat garbage.
