The featured object in today’s edition of Antiques Roadshow is a needlework composition probably from the dep of Calvados, home of the Bayeaux tapestries. It appears to be a fragment of a larger work, for we usually these find dogs in pairs. Notice here, and there, the artist’s bold use of leather accents for the nose and collar. Large areas of the work showcase the satin stitch, sometimes called the damask stitch. We usually see such expert artisanship only in the work of traditional embroideries of China and Japan. Notice too, the stitcher’s effective use of highly reflective silver thread to accent the contours of the subject. Excellent in use of stitch and thread, this appears to be an extraordinary work of a very talented stitcher. It’s a shame the fragment is unsigned. While there are a few small condition issues, I’d place its value at auction at 15,00 to 25,000 €.
