While the square capitals developed into the Rustica and Uncials, they also underwent development into a current style, written for daily use quickly and with little care, with pointed pen or stylus on papyrus or wax. The shapes of the letters were simplified and often joined, ascenders and descenders appeared – from the majuscule a miniscule-cursive was formed. These miniscules were to become decisive in the further development of western lettering.
