The classical writing of the 17th century derived from Humanistic script but was shaped by the influence of copper engraving, which at the time had reached its highest technical performance, reproducing the finest of lines. Book printing also aped the resultant style of heavy strokes and contrasting hairlines, though it was not suited to relief printing. However, some of the types that were fashioned by this influence – Bodoni, Didot, Walbaum and others – still rank among the most beautiful.
